Musical flavour for all ages at Clipper Race in Southampton
Headline bands will be rocking the city for the kickoff weekend of the world’s longest yacht boat race, which departs from the Southampton on July 31.
Big names such as Toploader, Delays and Parade are entertaining during the free Clipper Race weekend held in Ocean Village in Southampton July 28-31.
With less than three weeks to go until the Clipper 11-12 Round the World Yacht Race departs from Southampton, some exciting headline bands have been announced, as part of the entertainment schedule providing residents will four days’ free entertainment.
Local Southampton indie group Delays are performing Saturday (July 30) of the Clipper weekend arranged by Southampton City Council, MDL Marinas and Clipper Ventures. Delays have released four critically acclaimed albums to date, the first three of which made the Top 30 in the UK Album Chart.
Other headline bands include Toploader who feature on Friday evening (July 29). The mega success band from the 90s and 00s, known for hits such as “Dancing in the Moonlight”, reunited this year and front man, Joe Washbourn, has recently featured on this year’s “Popstar to Operastar” programme.
One of the hottest teen idol bands, Parade, will also be performing. The five-piece girl band last year toured with Shakira and debut single “Louder” was in the top 10 of the UK singles chart.
Councillor John Hannides, Cabinet Member for Resources, Leisure and Culture at Southampton City Council said:
“I’m delighted that the Clipper Race is starting in Southampton and it is set to be an entertaining weekend for residents and visitors of all ages.
“We want residents to get involved to make this a really special weekend for the many courageous sailor set to commence their round the world race.
“It is a fantastic opportunity to showcase all that Southampton has to offer to an international audience and the event will attract tens of thousands of people of all nationalities to Southampton, generating millions of pounds for the local economy.
“I hope residents will join in on the celebrations and help see all the crews off in style.”
The 10 yachts depart from Southampton on Sunday July 31 on their 40,000 mile race, which is set to last for 12 months.
